About Naturopathy

What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct profession in which licensed
physicians practice under a number of fundamental principles.
Treatment is selected according to the principles and based on the idea
that your body has an innate ability to heal itself. The Naturopathic
Physician acts as a guide to gently direct the patient towards optimal
health and wellness. The principles under which Naturopathy is based
include:

1. The Healing Power of Nature – the healing process is ordered and
intelligent. The role of the Naturopathic Physician is to support and
facilitate this process by removing obstacles to health and recovery.

2. Treat the Whole Person – Naturopathic Physicians address all
aspects of a person’s wellbeing including the physical, mental,
emotional, environmental, genetic, social and spiritual aspects.

3. Identify and Treat the Causes – the Naturopathic Physician seeks to
identify and remove the underlying cause of illness rather than
eliminating symptoms through suppression.

4. First Do No Harm – Naturopathic Physicians prefer methods that
utilize the least invasive procedures and treatments to minimize the risk
of harmful side effects.

5. Prevention – treatment of disease is as important as the prevention
of disease. Naturopathic Physicians assess risk factors and
susceptibility to disease and make appropriate interventions that
promote wellness and lead the patient to a healthy lifestyle.

6. Doctor as Teacher – part of the role of the Naturopathic Physician is
to educate the patient and cultivate patient self-responsibility. The
therapeutic potential of the doctor-patient is also recognized and valued.
